What Is True…or…Are You Like the Bereans?

July 31, 2009

I received a quote at the bottom of an email that read…

“Condemnation without investigation, is the height of ignorance.” ~ Albert Einstein

I really like it. I think that applies to many different things, including the spiritual things! In fact, perhaps that is one of the most important things that applies to.

That quote is usually used when a person is trying to get someone else to accept something they believe. If the person rejects it without checking into it…well, it is a legitimate statement. However, it goes both ways. What about the person who blindly ACCEPTS things without investigating them? That, too, is the height of ignorance, isn’t it? It brings to mind the following.

Proverbs 18:17. “The first to state his case seems right, till the other cross examines.”

Or, if you prefer the KJV… “He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him.”

Act 17:11  These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Gal 1:8  But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

How many times does someone come along who seems to know what they are talking about…who has the appearance of knowledge and authority…but when you start actually checking out what they are saying, you find that the person is incredibly off base…very much in error.

Dave and I have run into that so many times…and again just recently when we were asked to check out something. We weren’t really all that surprised as to the general error of what is being taught as it is something we have run into before. However, as we began to diligently check out each of this person’s statements, we were amazed at the specific errors. We began to realize that this person is either incredibly ignorant of the subject (in spite of all the appearance of study and knowledge), or very deceived, or an outright deceiver. In any of those cases…this person’s teachings should NOT be trusted!

We started to check each of this person’s “proof” texts and found many of them to be flat out incorrect. We were amazed at the incredible word twisting and misquoting of scripture and outright error filled statements being made.  That drove us into doing more research on the historical statements that were also being made and found fallacies in those, too. We did not take any one source as truth, but cross checked many sources, even talking to someone we know who is a bit of an expert in this subject. Nope…this person’s statements are flat out incorrect.

Then we decided to research the person. Oh, my! Even many who actually agree with this person’s underlying premise distance themselves from this person. We read both from those who disagree with this person as well as from those who agree (whether in whole or in part). We did not take blindly take statements made about this person.

Sadly, this person has been proven to have misquoted and misrepresented a number of people (in very clever ways). Some of this misquoting actually tears down the people quoted and makes them appear to be deceivers when they are not. This person makes it look like the ones being quoted believe things they don’t and experienced things they did not! I found online an article that actually show this person’s quotes along with the orginal writings and their actual context.

One person we ran into online compared something else this person wrote to the teachings found in a Rosicrucian book.  This other person makes a case for the one we were checking out probably being occultic! This is even more interesting when you take into consideration the fact that this person accuses those who disagree with this person as being occultic. Although, if this person IS occultic it does make sense. That is how they oftentimes operate…by accusing others of the very thing they are trying to hide about themselves.

This person has also used vague statements and made implications regarding this person’s own credentials, work history, etc. In fact, at least one statement contains two outright lies. We founjd someone online who actually very carefully researched this person’s history and even got copies of official documents.

When asked directly about this person’s marriage, this person hid two marriages and two divorces (being now in the third marriage for over 25 years). Now…you might “ask what is the big deal about that?” Well, two things. One is that it is a matter of integrity. If a person is willing to lie in one area, what makes us think that person won’t lie in another? Besides which… this person has actually been shown to lie in several areas!

The second is that this person has been allowed to speak in churches to congregations. This person has been supported (and this person’s materials recommended) by leaders who would consider this person disqualified if they knew about the divorces. It’s too bad they don’t simply check out this person’s actual work. Regardless of the divorces…the work itself is so shoddy as to make it totally useless!

Given the research we have done, both on what this person is saying (even with making allowance for the venue in which it is being said) and on the person, we tend to think this person is an outright deceiver, but we cannot know for sure. What is the motive? We won’t even venture to guess, for we don’t know another’s heart.

One more note of importance…this person, in another book…recommends some “further reading”. The further reading has to do with non-Christian, esoteric teachings. In other words, this person is recommending occult type books to back up this person’s teachings regarding the holy word of Yahweh! Oh, what a mess!

Anyway…these are the thoughts that came to mind when I read that quote! SO…

…when you are handed a tape, a book, a video, an Mp3 or any other teaching…do you actually diligently check out what is being said against what Yahweh says in His word? If people are being quoted…do you go to the source and check the wording and the context to make sure the quotes are being done accurately? Or do you just blindly accept it as truth? It does not matter that others may also believe it. They, too, might be deceived! We ALL need to be like those Bereans! This is how error slips into the body of Yeshua…through blindly accepting something as truth that is not.

This is not the only thing we have come across lately…but more on the other stuff at another time and in another post. Think, everyone! Be diligent. Use your Creator given wisdom!

Mat 7:15  Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

Act 20:29  For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.

Mat 19:18  He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,

2Co 11:13  For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.

1Jn 4:1  Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
